2006 R. Tait McKenzie Memorial Lecture: Physical Activity and Heart Disease Prevention – How Much is Enough? |
Physical activity clearly is important for reducing the risk of developing heart disease in men and women. However, what is less clear is how much physical activity is needed? This issue has been further clouded by different recommendations for physical activity over the past 10 years. The lecture will discuss the reasons behind the different physical activity recommendations, and provide an evidence-based answer to the question: “How Much is Enough?” I-Min Lee, MD, ScD, is an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and associate professor of epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. Her research interests focus on the role of physical activity in promoting health and enhancing longevity, and on women’s health. Lee has authored more than 150 scientific publications, most of which relate to physical activity. She is widely recognized for her expertise in physical activity and health, and has been invited to serve on several expert panels, and to speak at numerous national and international meetings. She was part of the team involved in putting together the landmark Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health in 1996. Among the honors she has received, Lee was awarded the Young Epidemiologist Award in 1999 by the Royal Society of Medicine, United Kingdom. She also received the Golden Shoe award in 2002 from WalkBoston, a pedestrian advocacy group, for her work on physical activity and women’s health. Lee is an elected member of the American Epidemiological Society and a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. She serves on the Editorial Boards of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise and Harvard Women’s Health Watch. |
