Lifelong Recreational and Sport Activities for Individuals with Disabilities
As a social minority, people with disabilities encounter social barriers that limit their quality of life. Participation in physical activity can empower people with disabilities to overcome those barriers. This session presents ways to facilitate empowerment through physical activity. Part one provides first-hand experience in adapting self-defense activities to include people of all abilities. Part two will take participants through how to develop, market, fund, and facilitate a canoe or kayak program for individuals of all levels of ability. Part three will showcase how a modified recreational kayak can be piloted “solo” by a person with quadriplegia.
