Teaching Respectfully about Sexual Orientation
The tremendous difficulties that GLBTQ youth face in society to be reviewed. Participants will discuss the research that shows that homophobia and heterosexism greatly contribute to GLBTQ youth's high rates of health risk behaviors. Participants will roleplay activities that can be used in a GLBTQ educational program. In this session attendees will leave with a set of tools they can utilize in their own school systems. It will offer accurate definitions about sexual and gender identity, and guidelines for providing multiple- or a single-session classes or workshops, and suggestions for being inclusive throughout a school setting.
