Spirituality, Movement, and People of the African Diaspora: Moving Spiritual Perspectives for Successful Programs |
From the transatlantic slave trade to today’s hip-hop culture, spirituality, in the form of dance and other movement forms, provides another aspect of the African-American culture that may be used to design meaningful and successful health promoting programs. This session will provided perspectives on (1) “Moving in the Spirit,” an exploration of our ancestral memory that creates a liberating dynamic life force within us; (2) “The Shout and other Dances of Salvation, Survival, and Resistance” used by slaves and, remnants of their modern existence; and, (3) “The Presence of Thompson’s Ten Canons of Fine Form in Hip-Hop Culture.” |
