Curricular Offerings to Increase Adolescent Female Participation in Physical Education
Many physical education curriculums utilize a male oriented, multi-sport curriculum. With the current obesity epidemic, and the fact that adolescent girls are the least active group in our society, many girls are using “coping and avoiding” behaviors in order to get out of participating in physical education, and are avoiding registering for elective physical education classes when given the choice. This session will be directed primarily to secondary physical educators and Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) professionals, and will focus on various curriculum alternatives designed to maximize participation and involvement for both boys and girls in physical education.
