Confronting the Elephant in the Locker Room: Challenges in Conducting Research on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered Issues in Sport and Physical Activity |
Research examining the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) individuals in sport and physical activity settings has increased in recent years (Iannotta & Kane, 2002; Krane & Barber, 2005). However, the heterosexist and homonegative climate of physical education and sport raises unique challenges for individuals conducting research on LGBT issues. In this presentation, we will discuss methodological, ethical, and practical issues (e.g., gaining access to and protecting participants) often encountered when conducting research with LGBT populations in sport and physical activity. We also will discuss important professional considerations (e.g., tenure, publication) when conducting research on LGBT issues. |
