Taking Physical Education beyond the Gym – How a Comprehensive Whole School Adventure Program Positively Affects Academic Achievement |
A quality adventure-based physical education program can have wonderful outcomes for students. In this session, explore how social skills and relationship building can be enhanced when a consistent approach is brought to, and adopted by, all teachers and staff in a school, and how improved relationships can positively affect academic achievement. Look at a four-year program, called RESPECT, which is currently being implemented and evaluated in four public middle schools in Boston, Massachusetts, that utilizes PE as the foundation. Program objectives, potential research outcomes, and the link between PE and academic classrooms will be addressed. |
