Intended for the dance student, educator, performer and choreographer, this intermediate modern dance technique class explores the movement concept of circular pathways. The class includes a Laban- and Hawkins-influenced floor warm-up, with improvisation and learned movement sequences through gestural and traveling patterns. Technical issues are addressed throughout the class. For the modern dance performer or dance student, this experience improves range of motion and enhances technique. For the choreographer, it suggests creative movement possibilities. For the dance educator, it provides a clear example of technique class based on a movement concept. Additional concepts addressed: far and near reach space, as the circling of the limbs occurs near to and far from the body’s center; instrumentation, as the circling patterns transfer from one body part to another; the three planes of movement (transverse, frontal, and sagittal), as the circling actions of the limbs occur in all three planes; and tempo, as the speed of the movement combinations quicken. The goal of the session is the student’s and educator’s experience of a full range of movement in circular pathways. . The presenter’s choreography has been showcased as part of the American College Dance Festival at the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theater. |
