Instructional Strategies for Developing "Listening" Bodies |
Learn instructional strategies for implementing a somatic approach to the dance class by: (1) outlining somatics history as a field that spawns many techniques and movement therapies; (2) illustrating how body listening becomes a featured component in (K12 and post-secondary) technique classes; and (3) outlining a method for structuring units to engage participants in sample activities. A vital mission is to build positive body perceptions and kinesthetic awareness within and beyond the classroom. This session provides instructional strategies for infusing a body-listening, somatic approach, culled from a wide range of scientific, experiential, and creative domains - to revolutionize and energize both class and curriculum, emphasizing the holistic approach. Five body listening categories include: Kinesthetic-sensation, Spatial-perception, Creative, Breath-imagery, and Ecopsychological. This subjective, process-oriented approach expands the traditional technique class by exploring movement, perception, vision, sensation, anatomy, and physiology, while engaging in reflective activities (writing, improvisation, drawing) and our relationship within the environment and self/body-perception. The presenter danced with Garth Fagan Dance and has worked as a teaching artist and artistic design consultant for the Leonard Bernstein Center for Learning through the Arts. |
