Gray Cells and Barbells: Implementing a Fitness Education Course
Fitness education in secondary PE has become increasingly popular in light of the obesity epidemic. Schools have obtained grants to purchase fitness equipment for their schools with the hopes of increasing youth fitness and reducing fatness. Despite these intentions, making youth ‘do fitness’ may be counterproductive and may turn youth away from physical activity. Without an understanding of the objectives of fitness education, physical educators may fail to meet the objectives of a quality fitness education program. In this session fitness education curricula and objectives will be discussed and recommendations for delivering a quality fitness education program will be provided.
