Ethnic Differences in the Physical Activity Selections of 9th Grade Students |
Results of a survey of over 800 9th grade physical education students in a large, multi-ethnic school district will be presented. Purposes of this study were to determine physical education activity preferences and compare preferences by ethnicity. Results suggest student preferences may be based on socio-economic status, racial stereotyping, perceived dominance of particular sports by a culture, and role modeling within cultures. Given the importance of curriculum design in engaging students, teachers with ethnically diverse class compositions may have a more challenging task than teachers with more homogeneous ethnic groupings. Strategies to help teachers in multi-ethnic settings will be discussed. |
