Leisure, Exercise, and Cognitive Vitality
Rowe and Kahn identified three keys to successful aging: (1) maintaining high cognitive and physical function; (2) minimizing disease, disability, and infirmity; and, (3) engaging in life (and with others). With approximately 77 million baby boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) reaching the age of older adults (> 65 years of age) in 2011, promotion of successful aging through leisure, exercise, and other biopsychosocial interventions is rapidly becoming essential. Leisure activities and exercise promote health and fitness, enabling independence and autonomy, and a high quality of life. Discussion related to the research showing the benefits of leisure and physical activity on cognitive vitality.
