Ethics and Issues in Youth and Interscholastic Sports |
Sports build character say parents, educators, and others. A lack of evidence supports this claim, which may have been perpetuated because adults want to believe that children and youth participating in organized sports will learn cooperation, self-discipline, loyalty, sportsmanship, and teamwork. This presentation will discuss whether competitive sports in youth programs and schools are more negative than positive. If winning-at-all-costs is the expectation, then cheating, violence, overtraining, drug abuse, and a lack of civility toward competitors will be condoned? However, if coaches and parents teach and require high standards of behavior, then moral values can be taught to young athletes. |
