National Dance Association Scholar/Artist Lecture: The Power of Dance in Society and Education - Lessons Learned from Tradition and Innovation
Please join the NDA Board of Directors in welcoming the 2006 Scholar/Artist, Paulette Côté. Côté has taught dance at all levels and in teacher preparation programs, including creative dance, Dalcroze Eurhythmics, and dance accompaniment. She developed motor learning modules and a teacher training program in partnership with the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and has presented in Seoul and Gwang-Ju (Korea), Bangkok (Thailand), Hong Kong and Beijing (China), Singapore, Kuching (Malaysia), Taipei (Taiwan), and Manila (Philippines). Côté has published several professional articles, two books, and recently co-authored the “Teaching Dance Skills: A Motor Learning and Development Approach” (2003). Lecture Synopsis: “Traditionally, concepts such as art appreciation, student-centered learning, and holistic wellness have often been at odds with educational priorities. Education reform around the world has triggered shifts from traditional to innovative practices. This presentation addresses the link between society and dance education, and how each may act as an agent of change upon the other. Keeping in mind that there is good and bad in both tradition and innovation, key concepts in teacher training programs are examined. Honoring students’ artistic achievements and maximizing dance appreciation for life are crucial to the future of dance education.”.
