Grading and Report Cards for Standards-Based Physical Education |
This presentation will help practicing teachers and PETE professionals confront the problems of grading in high-stakes, standards-based environments. Authentic assessment should impact grading and reporting practices. Traditional letter grading systems fail to provide specific information about learning targets. A distinction is needed between grading variables (achievement standards) and reporting variables (learning and social behaviors). Guidelines provided for grading and reporting in standards-based physical education that emphasize clear reference points (learning targets and standards). A report card format is proposed based on physical education content standards and grade-level indicators. Various methods for converting rubric scores to grades also suggested. |
