International Dance Exchanges and Studies Abroad: A Pedagogical Approach in Promoting Cultural Understanding
Dance is the universal language that enables cultures to communicate in a non-threatening environment. This audio visual presentation demonstrates the personal benefits and educational tools of international dance exchange/study programs that stimulate the creative process in the classroom, enhance lesson plans, and promote cultural understanding for both dance students and educators. Learn pedagogical possibilities when documented faculty exchanges and studies abroad are incorporated in American college dance programs. Choreography and other excerpts from Russian and Chinese documentaries, created as part of these studies, will be shown. Outcomes from implementing these international experiences in American curriculums are discussed; foreign exchange/studies abroad information is provided. Although the material presented is appropriate for all educational levels, the presentation focuses on college students and educators. This program applies the NDA content areas for: professional development, research, student programs, dances from other cultures, choreographic process and product, and dance education. The presenter wrote “Dance Auditions: Preparation, Presentation and Career Planning”, and is the 2003 GAHPERD University Dance Educator of the Year Award recipient.
