A trip to Greece to explore the ancient games
Brian R. Bolt, Jim Buriak and Brian R. Bolt, Roanoke College, Salem, VA

This presentation will describe a travel course to Greece, including stops in Corinth, Olympia, Delphi, Athens, and Crete. This college liberal arts course incorporates the ancient Greek ideal of developing mind and body in harmony by including physical activity (i.e. reenacting Olympic events, Greek folk dances, physical training). Program participants will learn how the games influenced and were influenced by politics, war, economics, and other societal institutions through evidence of sport in historical records, poetry, architecture, and art. We will explain how, by visiting the sites of ancient games, participants see first hand the birthplace of many modern sport customs.
