Do They Really Understand? Using the Healthy School Report Card to Gain Administrative and Community Support
Theresa Lewallen, ASCD, Alexandria, VA and David K Lohrmann, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN

School administrators and staff want to create a healthy, positive environment that supports social, emotional and physical development as well as intellectual achievement; however, they don't necessarily know the best approaches for doing so. The evidence-based ASCD Healthy School Report Card can bring schools and communities together to identify and measure the approaches that create a healthy school. The tool addresses school and classroom climate, school safety and environmental quality, family and community involvement, medical and mental health services, staff wellness, nutrition, health education, and physical activity. It can be used to document current accomplishments and identify areas for improvement.
