Going Beyond the Classroom: Peer Leadership Programs as Effective Tools for Prevention

Participants will explore a comprehensive countywide peer leadership program that has been implemented for over 10 years. Participants will gain base knowledge of field experience, theories utilized, an overview of simultaneous multi-program implementation, program and student outcomes, and collaboration of schools and communities to increase community capacity. Adolescent stage of development is accepting of leadership roles, eager to try adult-like functions, and in need of adult support. Strategic development of a comprehensive peer leadership program can assist youth to make healthy choices as well as produce healthy, productive citizens. Session audience: school personnel, health educators, university personnel, and community leaders.
