Vehicle accidents during team travel continue to be an issue for athletic department/physical education administrators, coaches, and teachers at all levels. The school’s transportation policies will vary by institution based on factors such as size, budget, and sports offered. Examples of areas discussed are student drivers, modes of transportation, driver qualifications, supervision, weather, distance, hierarchy of risk, and number of passengers. To help better understand safe transportation practices, recommendations from the National Transportation Safety Board will also be discussed.
