Alliance Scholar Lecture: Successfully Treating Nicotine Dependence
This presentation will review the biology of addiction and the involvement of nicotine, depression, and the endocannabinoid system in tobacco dependence. Moreover, the latest management options for treating nicotine dependence will be reviewed to include the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approved nicotine replacement therapies i.e., nicotine polacrilex (2 mg & 4 mg), nicotine transdermal patches, the nicotine nasal spray, and the nicotine oral inhaler. In addition, the only non-nicotine smoking management option approved by the FDA will also be discussed i.e., bupropion SR (an antidepressant). Finally, a brief review of an investigational drug currently being evaluated for smoking cessation (Rimonabant).
