Research Design Issues Related to Qualitative Methods
Since the 1980s qualitative research has increasingly been used to illuminate problems associated with a range of practices, policies and social issues in sport and physical education. There has been, however, growing concern over the general quality of the qualitative research being submitted for publication in leading physical education and sport journals. Questions of quality in qualitative research are inherently tied to the numerous design and representation issues that surround the qualitative research process. When studies are inadequately conceived, qualitative researchers often find themselves faced with the rejection of their work after having invested a substantial amount of time to the research process. Therefore this presentation is targeted at new and experienced researchers who are learning to make sound decisions about the design and conduct of qualitative research. More specifically, the characteristics of good qualitative research and criteria for evaluating the soundness of qualitative work submitted for publication will be highlighted in this presentation. Emphasis will also be placed on writing qualitative research for publication, in particular, the methods/methodology section.
