Delivering Multicultural Health Education
A team of students teachers from Canada have engaged in a collaborative venture with local educators to launch the first network of health promoting schools in the Eastern Carribbean. participants will learn about the process, activities, and outcomes of this project. This session will also focus on the essential elements of making health education content more comprehensible to English Language Learners, and low literacy students. Strategies and best practices for working with diverse students will be presented. Project PATH, which uses culturally appropriate health messages to impact the lifestyle behaviors of high school students in predominately latino schools will be presented. Participants will also learn about a successful ELL coaching program offered in St. Paul, MN. The program is designed to increase ELL student achievement by coaching classroom teachers in how to best meet the needs of the ELL health education students in their mainstream classroom.
