MET Scoring and Applications for Special Populations
The compendium of MET values developed by Ainsworth et al. (1993, 2000) has become a very important tool in scoring self-report measures (e.g., questionnaires or diaries) of physical activities. However, most of MET values are calculated based on healthy adults and many activities engaged by special populations were not included, which make them applications sometime challenging. This symposium will provide an overview on what are METs values, how to apply them in physical activity research, critical issues when applying them to special population (e.g., older adults, individuals with disabilities and obesities), and major research needs in this area.
