Intimidation of Dance Students - Purposeful or Unwitting?
The extensive legacy of intimidation as a teaching tool utilized within the world of dance instruction is a historical reality. What are the roots of, and the problems resulting from, this pedagogical reality? This presentation identifies and examines eleven factors that underpin the authoritarian teaching tradition in dance technique classes and utilizes reform educational thought to critique the messages behind these methods and the effect on dance students. The goal of this study is to contribute to the enhancement of dance technique teachers' pedagogical theory and practice. The presenter's research is documented in scholarly dance education and history publications.
