Girls Gone Wild: Female Athletes As the Next Target Market for Sports Dietary Supplements
In 2003, 7 million athletes played sports at the high school level, the largest number ever seen. The largest percentage of new participants was young girls with over 49,000 girls going out for sports over the previous year, as opposed to 28,000 new male participants. With more females playing sports, this growing consumer base is being targeted to purchase everything from surfboards to female-formulated sports supplements With 40% of female athlete’s grades 9-12 reporting ever using sport supplements and 18% reporting current use, this session will focus on product marketing efforts, reasons for use by females, and future trends.
