Private/Public Collaborations: Attracting Urban Girls to Physical Activity and Sport in Massachusetts
While the benefits of physical activity and sport are clear, how to engage and retain youth in physical activity programs remains a challenge. Significant disparities in physical activity participation exist between girls and boys and among various racial and ethnic groups. Girls are particularly underrepresented in urban areas. In this session we will describe the steps being taken in Massachusetts to engage more girls in physical activity and sport programs through collaborative and innovative programming. Findings from a study of youth sport providers on how they attract and engage urban girls of color to their programs will be presented.
