Message Framing and Evidence for Effectiveness in Promoting a Detection Behavior
People encode information relevant to risky decisions in terms of potential gains or potential losses. Different presentations of information can influence whether one encodes information as gains or losses. Health messages that emphasize positive consequences may be heard in a less powerful way because of one?s optimism regarding one?s health. Emphasizing potential losses inherent in not taking a recommended health action may shift the reference point from optimism to one of some doubt. This session will present evidence for the use of a loss-framed message in promoting the detection behavior of mammography utilization.
