Lifestyle Change in Low-Income Women: Can It Be Done?
An epidemic of obesity drives increases in Type 2 diabetes and sustains cardiovascular disease as the leading killer of women. WISEWOMAN is a federally-funded research project that attempts to apply proven strategies in nutrition and physical activity to a population with limited resources and low health literacy. DuPage County Health Department, a pilot site for WISEWOMAN in Illinois, has built the program on our culturally competent and effective Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program, "Why Wait?" Clients of that program are offered the opportunity to participate in WISEWOMAN. Lesson learned about assisting low-income clients to healthier lifestyle will be presented.
