All I Want to Do is Coach: The Great Mental Divide of Teaching and Coaching
Focus is on female undergraduate teaching and coaching perspective, each role’s socialization process, mixed messages between each role, unique challenges facing women, and how coaching is often prioritized over teaching. From the perspective of three former female collegiate athletes and coaches, this interactive workshop is designed to create an awareness of “teaching” and “coaching” practices used in pre-service methods courses. Participants will discuss such topics as: inherent differences between teacher and coach, following in the footsteps of mentors, and realizing the differences and expectations of each role. Hands-on activities will examine how women perceive role challenges and the relatively low numbers in professional roles.
