Psychometric Issues in Assessment of Attitudes Toward Individuals With Disabilities

Weimo Zhu, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, IL

While assessing attitudes towards individuals with disabilities has long been an interest in the field of physical education/kinesiology (see e.g., Hutzler, 2003), practice in constructing scales to measure attitude has not taken the advantages of modern measurement theory and methods. For example, many ordinal scales were mistreated as interval scales and item differential function (DIF) of an item, i.e., if the item is biased towards a specific group, has never examined. Based on a comprehensive review of the research papers published in the area of attitudes toward individuals with disabilities published in the past two decades, this presentation has two purposes: (a) To provide a comprehensive review on psychometric quality of the studies identified and (b) To provide a brief tutorial on how new testing theories (e.g., item response theory) and statistical methods (e.g., DIF) can significantly improve the quality of scales to be developed. Software related to new methods will also be introduced.
