Assessing Children with Severe Disabilities
StructureMeasurement and Evaluation Council
DescriptionStandardized motor tests are inappropriate for children with severe disabilities who cannot perform many if not all of the movements required in these tests. A more functional assessment approach is required which focuses on assessing motor, perceptual, and fitness abilities that are related to a functional goal such as walking with a gait trainer, swimming at a local club, or hitting golf balls at driving range. The purpose of this presentation is to outline a functional assessment approach for children with severe disabilities. Included will be an example of a functional assessment protocol that can guide the assessment process.
