The Student-Athlete Experience: Gender and Race
The Student-Athlete Experience discovered how socialization affects youth deciding about athletic participation to college student-athletes continuing through the socialization process. The study also uncovered what stereotypes young athletes are exposed to and how those impact their sport-related decisions. The instrument was developed based on NCAA participation rate statistics and qualitative data gathered from student-athletes during the 1998-1999 academic year. This research is significant to teachers and coaches, administrators, and government officials as these results identify geographic and sport-based areas where inequity is present. The results also indicate where funded programs, facilities, and coaching are needed to increase opportunities for participation.
