| The Intersection of Athletic and Racial Identity in Sport |
| Structure | Ethnic Minority Council |
| Description | The purpose of this session is to explore the relationships between racial and athletic identity. Historically, the supposed athletic superiority phenomenon has been examined genetically, anthropocentrically, physiologically, and sociologically. The profusion of explanations of the idea of athletic superiority is a testimony to the complexity of this phenomenon. We propose to examine this phenomenon by exploring racial and athletic identity. Few studies have explored the relationships and intersections of these two measures. Careful study will likely provide yet another compelling perspective of the often debated issue of athletic superiority. This session will examine racial and athletic identity from several perspectives. |
