Balancing the Scales: Coordinating a Comprehensive Approach to Obesity in Schools
Jenny Parker, Northern Illinois University, Barb Weigand, New Trier High School, Winnetka, IL and Peggy Pedersen, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR

It is well documented that obesity in adolescent youth is increasing at an alarming rate. While interested parties have approached this issue from a variety of different perspectives (e.g., The Surgeon General, Centers for Disease Control, medical practitioners, teachers, researchers, politicians etc.), success has been limited. Through audience participation and discussion, this presentation will focus on coordinating a comprehensive approach to obesity in schools. Specifically, the roles played by teachers, students, parents, administration, food services, the school nurse, body image task force, and the health and physical education curriculum will be examined. Practical examples and innovative activities will be provided.
