Developing Health Literate Students Through National Standard #4
Sandra Klarenbeek, Black Hills State University, Spearfish, SD and Aaron L. Banks, Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, MN

The fourth of the seven national standards for health education defines a health literate student as one that can analyze the influence of culture, media, and technology. A timely topic coinciding with the CDCP’s Youth Media Campaign, the purpose of this session is to help attendees better understand the power of mass media and its’ contribution to unhealthy, risky youth behaviors. Those attending will be presented a model for teaching media literacy to youth. Additionally, this session will present various strategies that educators might consider for use within the classroom to address standard four.
