Aquatic Instructional Materials: Improvements in Cultural Diversity and Decreasing Stereotypes
Camille P. O'Bryant, Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo, CA and Jerry DeMers, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA

A recent review of selected aquatic instructional materials found that the cultural diversity of the United States was not reflected in the photographs used in these materials. Further, these materials exemplified various stereotypes in our society and failed to depict people with disabilities as interested in or able to participate in aquatic activities. The purpose of this program is to share findings from an on-going analysis of instructional materials published by leading organizations in aquatic safety training in the United States. We will address the extent to which aquatic instructional materials continue to perpetuate stereotypes or begin to enhance diversity.
