Using Rubrics to Facilitate Faculty Performance Assessment
Alan C. Lacy and Margo Coleman, Illinois State University, Normal, IL

Annual faculty assessment is done at virtually every institution in higher education. For these assessments to be productive, it is critical that expectations for faculty performance be clearly delineated. The use of performance rubrics has gained popularity with physical education teachers in assessing student performance and providing meaningful feedback. With appropriate planning and design, rubrics can similarly be developed to facilitate the evaluation of faculty performance in teaching, scholarship, and service. This presentation will explain how to design rubrics that clearly communicate expectations to faculty members and discuss how to implement these rubrics into faculty assessment systems.
