Developing Health Literacy
The fourth of the seven national standards for health education defines a health literate student as one that can analyze the influence of culture, media, and technology. The purpose of this session is to help attendees better understand the power of mass media and its’ contribution to unhealthy, risky youth behaviors. Those attending will be presented a model for teaching media literacy to youth. Further the presentation will deliniate the nature and content of advertisements in three top selling magazines primarily intended for teenage audiences, and will speculate on the impact of such advertising on the lifestyle and behavior of teens.
