Making the Connection: Building a Community of Learners
The service-learning model is a popular method by which learning communities are being established in higher education. In particular, these experiences have benefited the pre-service teacher by better preparing them for future practicum and student teaching assignments. In addition to addressing NASPE and NCATE guidelines and meeting university commitment to serving surrounding communities, undergraduate students are given meaningful opportunities to further develop their teaching skills. Thus the purpose of this interactive session is to engage participants in a discussion related the development and implementation of service-learning experiences. Several highly successful community-based projects such as “Kidsport” will be presented. The benefits and challenges associated with service-learning examples will also be explored.
