Every training program should include sport-specific conditioning. Coaches who construct training programs should have a comprehensive understanding of how the athlete produces and utilizes energy. This presentation will include: 1) a review of the physiological demands placed on the athlete, 2) an explanation of the three energy systems, 3) identification of the methods for developing the three energy systems, 4) knowledge of the degree to which each energy system is called upon during a competition, and 5) an understanding of the relationship between general physical conditioning and sport-specific conditioning.
