Teaching Fitness with the Brain in Mind: an Exercise Program for Older Adults with Memory Impairment
This hands-on workshop will demonstrate the development of an exercise program that combines cognitive/sensor motor stimulation for older adults with cognitive impairments, especially for the ones with dementia. This wellness-based enrichment program offers opportunities/challenges for motor/cognitive rehabilitation for persons with brain damage. Focusing in abilities rather than in disabilities, this program promotes the application of meaningful activities that would increase participation, attention, and functional abilities. The program combines exercise, music, storytelling, communication, and health education into one group activity. The purpose of this workshop is to encourage health/fitness professionals to develop a safe and creative multi-sensory exercise program that suits the needs and well-being of older individuals with cognitive impairments.
