Using Disability Sports in General Physical Education and the Transition Process
StructureAdapted Physical Activity Council
DescriptionSecondary physical educators are faced with providing appropriate programming and addressing transition for students with disabilities (SWD). Over 90% of SWD receive physical education in the general setting by instructors not trained in adapted physical education--ideas for effective programming and transition must be shared. Since many secondary physical education curriculums are traditionally sports based, using skills and games from disability sports is a practical means of addressing appropriate programming. The purpose of this presentation is to share how implementing skills and games from disability sports can expand physical education programs and be a mechanism to address transition for SWD.
