Sports Teams as Communities of Character
Can sports build character? Our research suggests that the culture of the team is the most important single factor in determining whether sports experience will promote the growth of character. We provide a framework for building and assessing communities of character with an emphasis on the role of the coach. Reviewing on the research literature on effects of moral, character, and civic education efforts, we conclude that establishing sports teams as communities of character may be one of the most effective approaches to character and citizenship education available.
