The "Trickle Down Theory", Commercialization and Professionalization of Women's Competitive Sport
This presentation will examine the trickle down theory, commercialization and “professionalization”, of female competitive sport, focusing on basketball. The trickle down theory is where athletes, who aspire to play professional sport, lose sight of their educational endeavors. Specifically, the presentation will focus on (a) the positive benefits of Title IX (b) the concomitant problems and benefits of more participation, more commercialization and, more mirroring of the professional male athlete model, and (c) problems with devaluation of education as commercialization and professional opportunities arise. This session will feature current members of the WNBA including Heather Owen, Kate Paye, and others.
