Measurement: Analysis of Compositional Data: Problems and Solutions
Compositional, or percentage, data have been commonly used in Kinesiology research. A teacher's time spent in a physical education class, for example, can consist of several proportions, such as instruction, management, and observation. The special and intrinsic characteristic of the compositional data is that the proportions of a composition are naturally subject to a unit-sum constraint. In the past, however, this intrinsic characteristic has been basically ignored, and general descriptive and inferential statistics (e.g., ANOVA), which were devised to un-compositional data, have been used directly and inappropriately to compositional data with consequences. The purpose of this symposium is to introduce a set of appropriate methods for both descriptive and inferential statistical analyses of compositional data. By presenting three application examples, how to analyze compositional data using these new methods is illustrated. Finally, the limitations of the methods and future research directions in this area will be described.
