Pedagogy: Incorporating a Contextual Teaching and Learning Framework Into a Physical Education Teacher Education Program
Teacher quality has been a significant aspect of educational reform. Because teacher preparation programs play a major role in developing teacher quality, systematic examination of teacher education programs is necessary to guide of high-quality teacher preparation and ensure quality. Contextual Teaching and Learning (CT&L) is "teaching that enables learning in which students employ their academic understandings and abilities in a variety of in- and out-of-school contexts to solve simulated or real-world problems, both alone and with others" (Sears & Hersh, 1999, p. 4). This CT&L framework was used as the foundation to support the modification and implementation of the physical education teacher education program at The Ohio State University. The purpose of the symposium is to share the findings of the subsequent study of that program. It was important that the program be examined from multiple perspectives, beginning with a content analysis of the program and its alignment with the characteristics of Contextual Teaching and Learning. This was followed by a series of interviews with faculty and student to glean perspectives of those most effected by such a program. This presentation will include four components: a) a brief description of CT&L, b) a description of the infusion of the CT&L into a teacher preparation program, c) a qualitative analysis of the selective components of the framework from the perspective of the faculty who designed and implemented the program, and d) students' perspectives on the extent that the various components of the framework enhanced or inhibited their ability to become effective teachers.
