AAALF General Session: It’s OK to Play and Be Gay
AAALF’s General Session will feature keynote speaker Michael Muska, Director of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation at Oberlin College. “It’s OK to Play and Be Gay” is the topic for this openly gay man who was the subject of an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education, October 13, 2000—“Reflections of a Gay Athletics Director”. He will examine the role that health and physical educators and recreation leaders can play in creating a safe space for all students in their classes, teams and programs. Ways to promote positive self-images for students struggling with issues of sexual orientation will be explored through creative uses of curriculum, language and example. Mr. Muska will share some of his own life experiences and thoughts on the process of personal, yet uniquely individual, growth and coming to terms with being gay in the world of physical education and athletics.
