Athlete Leadership Development: Unexpected Results of Coaching From a Distance |
This session discusses the changing role women track and field athletes assumed when a majority of their coaching occurred via electronic media. Role changes suggest increased athlete investment in the program and enhanced leadership development as athletes took greater responsibility for their own learning and performance. We will describe: 1)how coaching context changed when most of it occurred via electronic media, 2)what leadership roles athletes assumed, and 3)how we supported the enhanced investment and leadership development. We will also discuss how the process of coaching and creating trust via distance learning impacts athlete learning and performance. |
Keyword(s): athletics/sports, coaching, leadership development
