Wearing the Secret Out: Homoeroticism and Homophobia in Physical Education
This session is a Reader's Theater Performance about homoeroticism and homophobia in physical education, based on life history interviews with physical educators who self-identified as 'lesbian', 'bisexual', 'queer', and 'gay male'. The performance explores connections between their experiences of same-sex desire and discrimination to their student-teacher relationships, mental/bodily health, spirituality, racial identity and racism. There will be audience discussion about issues raised in the performance. The Reader’s Theater format itself will be discussed as a way of raising awareness about homophobia in physical education, teacher education, and K-12 public schooling.
